Durable Tile Flooring

Tile flooring for durability and value

Tile flooring can be a real asset to a home in a dollar and sense way. Much like hardwood floors, tile flooring will add dollar value and seller appeal to your home if you should decide to sell in the future.

The real value of tile flooring is in the way it makes you feel about the look of your home as you are living there day by day. Tile floors give a home a look of opulence, and is fitting with any style of decor.

Kitchens and bathrooms are often the rooms of choice for the installation of tile because it is durable and easy to clean. Tile is especially good  for a bathroom floor because of it's resistance to water and humidity. If properly installed and sealed, tile is a very good choice for either a bathroom or a kitchen.

While tile is often the choice for kitchens and bathrooms, other rooms of the home should not be overlooked. With all the colors, styles and patterns available, a tile floor in a living area can be beautiful. Many high end homes feature tile throughout with area rugs marrying furniture groupings together with a beautiful effect.

Warming up tile flooring

Tile flooring is often thought of as a cold material. Using area rugs with furniture groupings as pointed out above can have marvelous warming effects. It is also true that heat can be added to these floors. This is a wonderful effect for a tiled bathroom. There are, on the market, special coils that can be installed underneath tile when it is installed that warms the floor.

Tile installation

Tile installation is not as difficult as it is made out to be. They are after all just squares.

If the cost of laying tile is intimidating, it can be done as a do-it-yourself project if you are reasonably handy.

Purchase quality tile. Check to be sure they are uniform in size. If there is much variance in size, it will throw the grout lines off, and this is one of the mistakes novices make when laying tile.

If you want a clean looking contemporary look for your tile floor, select a grout in a color that closely matches the tile and make the grout lines very slim. For a more rustic homey look wider grout lines do fine, and you may even want to have a contrasting grout.

Plan your project well, take good measurements, buy all your tile at once to be sure coloration is uniform. Purchase a few extra in case of breakage. Realize that the area will be out of service for at least two or three days.
