Authentic wood flooring has become very expensive these days and many people can hardly afford them. Hardwood is especially rare and expensive these days and with the current trend of forest conservation, it is unlikely that the prices of hardwood and other wood products will ever go down in the near future. In fact, with the recently development on climate change, cutting down trees in some parts of the world has been subjected to very strict regulations that supply of hardwood and other wood products is fast declining.

Fortunately, there are now cheap substitute for authentic, such as vinyl wood flooring. Since vinyl wood flooring hit the market several years ago, its popularity has increased tremendously. What makes vinyl wood flooring very attractive to many people is that to the untrained eyes, vinyl wood flooring actually looks like the real thing. Some cleverly designed vinyl wood flooring looks exactly like real wood! It is just like having real wooden floor without spending a lot of money. In fact the texture of vinyl wood flooring differs from the texture and smell of real wood but unless you go touch and smell the floor you won’t know the difference?

Buying Vinyl Wood Flooring

The good thing about vinyl wood flooring materials is that they come in different designs, colors and wood grains. If you are looking for some mahogany wood planks, you can easily find something that looks almost exactly like that is made of vinyl. Of course, a way to reproduce the look of authentic wood grains on vinyl have been found, therefore you need not worry about your floor looking obviously like fake wood.

To find the right vinyl wood flooring for your home, check out your local home center. Many home centers around the country deal in vinyl wood flooring along with other flooring materials so you can easily find what you need. If you do not have easy access to a home center, use the internet to find what you need.

Installing Your Vinyl Wood Flooring

Installing your vinyl flooring is easy. Unlike real wood which can be quite tricky to install, putting your vinyl flooring in place is rather simple. You just need the right tools to work with in order to install your floor. No, you do not need special equipment and materials to put your vinyl flooring in place. You can easily install your vinyl flooring with the use of adhesives that you can buy from your favorite home center or hardware.

Installing vinyl flooring may sound a bit complicated especially to those people who have not tried installing anything in their life. Luckily, installing vinyl flooring is not really as complicated as you might think it is. Yes, there are certain things that you should watch out for when you venture into the task of installing vinyl flooring but the good news is that if you are good at following instructions and you have enough patience to repeat things when they do not look as good as they should, you will eventually be able to install your vinyl flooring like a professional. To help you install your vinyl floor, here are some important things that you should remember before you start working on your floor.

Take Accurate Measurements While Installing Vinyl Flooring

Taking accurate measurements is very important when installing vinyl flooring.  A lot of people do not bother to accurately measure the area that they plan to put vinyl on before they go shopping for flooring materials. Mistakes of this kind could spell disaster. Remember that certain types of commercial vinyl flooring are expensive and if you end up buying more of these materials than you should, you could lose a lot of money. Besides, you don’t really want to clutter your home or your garage with some left over vinyl flooring materials and throwing all those left over materials to the landfill is not a good idea either. Vinyl materials take hundreds of years to decompose so make sure that you do not have excess to stuff into the garbage.

On the other hand, having too little flooring material can also spell disaster. If you underestimated the floor area that you want to cover and you end up buying too little flooring material, you could ruin the overall look of your floor. A half finished floor does not look good so if you do not want to end up with something like that, you better take the time to measure your floor space. Do not rely on rough estimates and hunches. You can never be sure how much space you have unless you measure it correctly.

Get The Right Adhesives Is Important While Installing Vinyl Flooring

Using the right type of adhesives is very important when installing vinyl flooring. No, you cannot just use any types of adhesives that you want when installing vinyl flooring or else your floor will come off after a few months or so. Find out from your flooring material suppliers which types of adhesives work well with the kind of vinyl flooring that you want. Your supplier can guide you in this area.

Vinyl flooring for a busy household

Vinyl flooring can be a good choice for many rooms, especially those that get a lot of traffic, or where moisture is present. Kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms are good locations for easy cleanup vinyl flooring. This is also a good choice for families with children and pets in the household.

Vinyl flooring is not what it used to be. It is available in a diverse range of colors and patterns appropriate for any room of the house. The recent addition of textures and patterns that mimic real stone and tile flooring are ones I find especially appealing. Some are so convincing, that you almost have to feel them to be sure they are not actually tile or stone.

Easy cleanup is another aspect that makes this product so attractive. In a household with children and pets spills and puddles are an easy to fix problem.

Vinyl installation tips
Vinyl flooring can be installed over most surfaces, and comes in a wide range of prices. It is available in the form of tiles that have the adhesive embedded so that they are basically a peel and stick application. I personally don’t recommend these if you are planning for the long term.

You will also find vinyl flooring in sheet form that is available in six and twelve foot widths. This will cover most rooms without any seams. It is usually purchased by so much per running foot.

Installing sheet vinyl as a do-it-yourself project can save you quite a bit of money if you are on a tight budget. If the room is very large, it is good to have a buddy who is somewhat handy to help you manage the bulk of the piece. Working with a large piece of vinyl by yourself can be a bit tricky.

Measure your space carefully, then measure a second time to avoid errors. Make a sketch of your area, and note where there may be cutout areas. Add measurements to all sides of your sketch. This can be handy to take along when you are shopping. Purchase a little more than you need in case of errors, or in case it wasn’t cut square at the time of purchase. Leftovers can often be applied below sink areas for an easy to clean surface.

Prepare the surface you are covering. Smooth out high and low spots. Patch and sand if needed. Check surface to be sure there are no nails or staples protruding. Remove baseboards and if in good condition save to replace after vinyl is laid. Check carefully to be sure there are no nails sticking out. Clean whole surface to be covered.

Use scribing felt to make a template, and transfer this to the back of your vinyl. Use masking tape on top of your vinyl to reinforce corners so they don’t tear while you are positioning it.

Most home improvement stores will have brochures or booklets that lay out the steps for installation, along with a list of supplies you will need.

Some tools that will come in very handy are a utility knife, scissors, a straight edge, measuring tape, and masking tape to strengthen corners of vinyl while positioning. Take your time with this project if you have not installed vinyl before, have patience and you will be rewarded with a shiny new floor.
